Are you just starting to cook? Or, have
you been cooking for a while but do not feel you understand the
basics. In this article, we provide general, basic information
about cooking.
I like to cook. I can follow recipes and the
dishes turn out the way I see them pictured and they taste
good. My has a history of good cooks. In the South where I
grew up, we compliment the cook by saying, "She can burn some
food." This does not mean that the dishes would acturally be
burnt. It means that the dishes looked good and tasted
good.
You have to start somewhere and once you start,
you need to continually improve your skills. You can start with
the basic meals that were prepared for you as a child
and improve on those dishes. Then try other cuisine, such
as Italian or French or more complicated dishes that
involve sauces and more preparation.
One of the first steps is to learn the
terminology involved in cooking. We all understand tablespoon,
teaspoon, or cup. You may not know exactly what is meant by
braising, or roasting, or folding. If you have been cooking for
a while and decide to try recipes from other cuisines, you will
want to understand what the creator of the recipe meant. There
are a number of culinary dictionaries on the market. Most
cookbooks also start with a primer on how to prepare certain
meats and have glossaries that define cooking terms.
Measurements may differ by country or language so you will want
to make sure you understand exactly what is meant in the
recipe.
Trying simple recipes and achieving success
with these will build your confidence. Move on to more complex
recipes. The meal may not turn out exactly the way you think it
should be the first time, but keep trying. The cooking
experience is the same as with any other experience in life.
You keep trying until you get it right.
What you will find is that as your confidence
grows, your skills will improve. You will want to try new and
different recipes. You will also find yourself improvising and
adjusting ingredients to make the dish truly your own.
As you try new recipes, you should mark them in
your cookbook or make notes on your recipe cards. You will be
able to rotate these dishes in your meal planning. You should
also note the time requirements for the dishes. This will
assist you in planning your meals for work weeks and allow you
more time to prepare special dishes on your days off.
Another important step in basic cooking is to
make sure you have the proper utensils for measuring, blending,
and so on. You also want to make sure you have the proper pots
and pans for the dishes you are preparing.
Purchase the best set of cooking equipment you
can afford in your budget. If later you find you
love to cook, you can always upgrade.
Another cooking basic to consider is
preparation. If you have a few dishes that you are confident in
preparing, you know the ingredients. When you start to prepare
new dishes, you have to keep a shopping list to make sure you
have the appropriate ingredients on hand as well as the proper
utensils. Along with this preparation, you also have to keep in
mind the time factor, how long it will take to prepare the
dish.
Cooking to some is a chore that must be
endured. it can become more bearable if you start simply and
add more complex dishes as your skills improve.
